Supporting the Scheduling of Ready-Mix Concrete

Having an Eye on Time and Costs: Monitoring Concrete Mixer Lorries

Client: OHB-Teledata AG, end user: CEMEX Deutschland AG
Start: in 2005, map module added in 2009

We developed a web-config tool for CEMEX Germany, a producer of building material mainly operating in the field of ready-mix concrete. This tool is a web application which configures the OHB Teledata telematics systems used in the concrete mixer vehicles. It also gives an overview of the position of the transporters.

It was our aim to enable the planning department to configure their telematics units corresponding to the incoming orders so that they were able to keep an eye on the position of all concrete mixer lorries at any time, and that without constantly having to call the drivers. The measures taken support a fast planning as well as a transparent order processing and thus permit an enhanced customer service. Possible delays can be made up for on time by providing further transport capacities.

The telematics systems developed by our sister company OHB Teledata are directly connected to the concrete mixing system on board the vehicles. They deliver among other things data about vehicle positions, the time building sites or factories are reached and also about the unloading of concrete. Up to 2,000 vehicles in operation for CEMEX in France, England and Germany are equipped for the test stage.

Via our web portal, users can configure the telematics systems of vehicle fleets or of individual vehicles in order to e.g. determine the frequency of position reports. Other possible settings concern for example the prerequisites for sending messages which inform you about vehicles having arrived at factories or building sites, or the time window for unloading concrete after a building site has been reached.

A detailed overview of the status of your fleet is offered by a map module add-on for the application, which shows the current position of the vehicles, the delivery status, a part of the distance covered and last but not least the factories on a map provided by Google Maps. An easy and comfortable operating and a quick response time make the application a valuable tool for ready-mix concrete factories and their planning departments.

Next to the actual configuration tasks, the web portal allows you to manage vehicle fleets by determining factories and by assigning vehicles to vehicle groups and to certain factories. The multitenant application permits to define individual, user-specific access rights.

Data management takes place via a Microsoft SQL server database. The web application uses the Google Mapsā„¢ API and is hosted on a Windows Server.
